The 2023 Tour de France: An Unchained Adventure

    Published on

The 110th edition of the globally-renowned Tour de France is currently underway, with its starting point in Bilbao, Spain. This year, the contest has drawn 176 intrepid cyclists from around the world, each prepared to undertake the grueling 21-stage, 2116.14-mile journey. The Tour de France is not simply about velocity; it’s a strategic battlefield of endurance and tenacity, where the athletes challenge their limits until the very end.

Join us as we dissect the first stage intricacies and explore what makes the Tour de France such a captivating spectacle.

    The Race’s Grand Kickoff

The Tour de France debuts its grandeur with Stage 1 on July 1, 2023, challenging the cyclists with a demanding 113-mile (182km) hilly course that traverses the Cote de Laukiz, the tour’s first King of the Mountains checkpoint.

This race takes off in Bilbao, located in Spain’s Basque Country. This is the second time since 1992 that the Tour has commenced here. The initial course features five climbs, ranging from categories 3-4, injecting an immediate surge of adrenaline into the race.

    Understanding The Climb Categories

Each stage of the Tour de France includes some form of peak or “climb,” indicating any portion of the route on an upward gradient. The complexity of these ascents is gauged by their length and steepness, with the classification beginning at Category 4 and escalating to “Hors Category” (HC), denoting a climb that exceeds any defined category.

    The Pinnacles of Stage 1

The inaugural stage of the race incorporates the following summits:

    • Cote de Laukiz: Category 3, 1.43 miles at a 6.5% gradient
    • Cote San Juan de Gaztelugaxte: Category 3, 2.24 miles at a 7.7% gradient
    • Cote de Morga: Category 4, 2.5 miles at a 4.7% gradient
    • Cote de Vivero: Category 2, 2.7 miles at a 7.1% gradient
    • Cote d Pike: Category 3, 1.37 miles at a 9.2% gradient

The Prestigious King of the Mountain

The Tour de France tradition includes rewarding leading cyclists with distinctive jerseys. The Cote de Laukiz, being the first summit of the entire 2023 Tour de France route, plays a significant role in this tradition. The first 15 cyclists to conquer this peak earn points, with the leading rider being christened as the “King of the Mountain” and receiving the coveted red polka dot jersey.

The Battle for the Green Jersey

Another distinguished symbol of the Tour, the green jersey, signifies the leader in the points classification, generally bestowed upon the cyclist with the most consistent finishes.
