The Evolution of Michael Kors – An American Fashion Icon

    Published on

With his signature sleek, sporty aesthetic, Michael Kors has become one of the most recognizable names in American fashion. His eponymous brand generates billions in annual revenue from its chic accessories, clothing, watches, and beauty products available in luxury boutiques, department stores, and outlet malls worldwide. But long before the global success and household name status, Michael Kors charted an unexpected path in fashion driven by his passion for style.

    Early Interest in Fashion

Born Karl Anderson Jr. in 1959 on Long Island, New York, Kors took an interest in fashion from a very young age. With encouragement from his mother, a model, the young boy began designing clothes and even convinced her to let him attend design school. At the age of 17 while working at a boutique, Kors showed his own sketches to the store’s fashion director who was impressed enough to offer him a job designing the shop’s house line.

    Launching a Women’s Collection

In 1981, Michael Kors launched his own women’s collection with backing from Manhattan department store Bergdorf Goodman at just 21 years old. The line featured sleek, pared-down sportswear in neutral tones and high-end fabrics. His elegant take on casual luxury attracted attention, although the designer struggled financially in the fledgling business.

    First Bankruptcy and Revamp

After five years, production costs forced Kors to declare bankruptcy in 1993. He took the opportunity to revamp and relaunch with a lower-priced line, Michael Michael Kors, targeting a broader audience. The more accessible aesthetic resonated with consumers and helped get the business back on track starting in 1997.

    Project Runway Judge

Michael Kors rose to mainstream fame in 2004 as one of the original judges on the hit reality TV series Project Runway. His witty banter and critiques alongside host Heidi Klum and fellow judge Nina Garcia introduced the designer to millions of viewers each week. Many credit his Project Runway visibility for significantly expanding familiarity with the Michael Kors name and aesthetic.

    Expanding with MICHAEL Michael Kors

The designer continued growing his women’s collections through the 2000s while also launching handbags that became instant bestsellers. By 2004, Kors was ready to try a new lower-priced line targeting younger consumers. The resulting MICHAEL Michael Kors label blended classic American sportswear with contemporary details and soon became the company’s fastest-growing line.

    Menswear Launch

While Michael Kors had created women’s wear for over 20 years, it wasn’t until 2011 that he expanded into menswear. The menswear collection brought Kors’ “jet-set” aesthetic to men’s suits, leisurewear, accessories and shoes. Clean lines, high-quality fabrics like silk and cashmere, and luxurious casual style characterized the new men’s offering.

    Going Public and Further Growth

In 2011, Michael Kors Holdings launched on the New York Stock Exchange after filing for an initial public offering. The IPO valued the company at $3.8 billion. By capitalizing on growing demand for accessible luxury, Kors kept expanding its boutique count along with wholesale and licensing deals. Annual revenue surpassed $2 billion by 2016.

    Jimmy Choo Acquisition

To accelerate growth and diversify its luxury portfolio, Michael Kors Holdings acquired shoe phenomenon Jimmy Choo in 2017 for $1.2 billion. The company then changed its name to Capri Holdings to reflect the expanding brand stable. The Jimmy Choo deal gave Capri a leading footwear and accessories label to complement its already strong presence in handbags.

    Battling Brand Dilution

Michael Kors’ rapid expansion increased brand awareness, but also led to charges of overexposure. As outlet sales grew and MICHAEL Michael Kors became ubiquitous, the brand risked losing luxury cachet. Management vowed to rein in discounting and closed underperforming stores to rebalance full-price and outlet sales. But restoring the prestige would prove an ongoing battle.

    Luxury Focus and Store Closures

Capri targeted reviving the luxury aura of Michael Kors in its “Runway 2020” strategic plan starting in 2016. Initiatives included limiting department store distribution, closing unprofitable locations, reducing promotional activity, and focusing more on the higher-end Michael Kors Collection. But the brand continued struggling to grow sales. By 2020, the company planned to shut around 100 Michael Kors stores in North America to reset the brand.

    Acquisition of Versace

In its boldest move yet, Capri added legendary Italian luxury brand Versace to its portfolio in 2018. The $2 billion purchase made Capri the first U.S.-based fashion group with three global fashion houses under its umbrella. Versace represented a big opportunity for Capri to expand its reach in the true luxury space and shift perceptions of Michael Kors further upmarket.

    Recent Collections and Shows

Michael Kors’ most recent runway collections and shows have continued pushing for a return to glamour and exclusivity. His Spring 2023 collection evokes the ease of the 1970s with jewel-toned caftans, sleek wrap dresses, and geometric prints. Past shows have drawn A-list front rows and returned to New York Fashion Week after years in Europe to re-engage American media and buyers. The brand also unveiled a new corporate logo in 2021 to signal its revamp.

    Handbags and Small Leather Goods

Right from his company’s beginnings, handbags have been central to Michael Kors’ success. His signature tote bags became bestsellers immediately when they launched in the early 2000s. Clean, minimal silhouettes with subtle branding and high-quality leathers make Kors bags go-tos for everyday luxury. Small leather goods like wallets, wristlets and phone cases also represent major sales drivers. Classic designs get updated each season with fresh colors and hardware.

    Footwear Collection

Although Michael Kors licensed his shoe production until 2008, footwear has grown into a staple category. Both the MICHAEL Michael Kors and higher-end Michael Kors Collection lines include shoes ranging from sandals, flats, heels, boots, sneakers, and slippers in sophisticated palettes and luxe materials. The brand also offers seasonal fashion footwear accentuated with details like studs, buckles, and grommets for edgy flair.

    Watches: Michael Kors Access

Capitalizing on the boom in fashion watches, Michael Kors launched his watch collection in 2004. The tech-driven timepieces combine digital features with sleek silhouettes and customizable display faces. The idea of wearable tech ultimately evolved into the Michael Kors Access line. It integrates touchscreen technology and activity tracking into classic watch styling for a versatile, connected accessory.

    MICHAEL Michael Kors Label

As the company’s volume leader, the MICHAEL Michael Kors line targeting younger consumers covers an array of products. Handbags, small leather goods, footwear, jewelry, watches, and apparel all get the MICHAEL treatment through logo patterns, bolder colors, hardware details, and sleek silhouettes. The diffusion line marks Michael Kors’ big push into the “accessible luxury” space starting in the mid-2000s.

    Michael Kors Menswear Look

Michael Kors’ menswear aesthetic reflects leisure and luxury with laid-back staples, dressed-up essentials, and accessories. Elements like lightweight cashmere sweaters, stretch cotton trousers, silk print shirts, peacoats, aviator sunglasses, and textured ties create an understated yet refined mood. Tailored separates can be mixed and matched for both casual days or events. The vibe falls somewhere between weekend wear and country club attire.

    Diversity and Inclusion

In 2020, Michael Kors and Capri Holdings pledged to fight racial injustice and improve diversity and inclusion. Kors partnered with the NAACP for a grant program supporting Black student designers. The brand also committed to add diverse voices to its creative process and feature inclusive imagery and partners. While fashion still lacks representation, Michael Kors has taken steps to open doors.

Philanthropy: United Way, God’s Love We Deliver

Giving back has been important throughout Michael Kors’ career. He’s been a longtime supporter of god’s Love We Deliver, which provides meals to people living with illness. The organization’s SoHo building even hosts the Michael Kors Design Lab. His company also partnered with United Way following Hurricane Sandy, raising over $5 million in relief. Kors often leverages his collections and celebrity connections to benefit causes close to his brand ethos.

    Accolades and Awards

Michael Kors has earned industry praise and awards recognizing his timeless American sportswear aesthetic. He was named CFDA Women’s Ready-to-Wear Designer of the Year consecutively from 1999-2003 and Accessory Designer of the Year in 1990. In 2010, Time magazine named Kors one of the 100 Most Influential People in the world. And he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2019 commemorating his global fashion impact.

    Looking Ahead

While Michael Kors has faced ups and downs, the founder still leads design vision for the company. As sales rebound and new branding sinks in, the coming years will determine whether Kors’ luxury focus can reposition the label to capture today’s market.
