Deadly Grizzly Attack in Banff National Park

    Published on

A grizzly bear attack in Banff National Park has left two people dead, according to Parks Canada. The tragic incident occurred Friday evening in the Red Deer River Valley west of Ya Ha Tinda Ranch.

Parks officials said they received an alert from a GPS device around 8 pm indicating a bear attack in the area. A specially trained wildlife response team was immediately dispatched to the scene. However, poor weather conditions delayed the team’s helicopter response.

With no helicopter transport available, the ground team embarked on an overnight trip to reach the remote location. They finally arrived on site around 1 am and made the grim discovery of two deceased victims.

While at the scene, the response team encountered a grizzly exhibiting aggressive behavior. Due to the clear threat to public safety, Parks Canada made the difficult decision to put down the bear. DNA tests later confirmed this was the same grizzly involved in the fatal attack.

    Circumstances Remain Unclear

Details surrounding this tragic incident are still limited as the investigation continues. The identities of the victims have not been publicly released. Parks Canada has not revealed what may have provoked the sudden attack by the bear.

Such fatal encounters are extremely rare in Banff. The last recorded grizzly attack causing human death was nearly 20 years ago. But officials say bears can be unpredictable and dangerous if startled or threatened.

Visitors are being reminded to use caution in bear country and take steps to prevent surprise encounters. Parks Canada expressed condolences to all those impacted by the devastating loss of life.

This couple were seasoned backcountry hikers & knew bear protocol.

Here are some recommended precautions people should take when visiting bear country:

    • Travel in groups and make noise to avoid surprising bears. Talk, sing, or clap your hands.
    • Be alert and watch for signs of bear activity like tracks or scat. Look for fresh claw marks on trees.
    • Keep food sealed and stored away from camp. Never keep food in your tent.
    • Cook and eat away from your sleeping area and don’t sleep in the clothes you cooked in.
    • Clean up food scraps thoroughly. Don’t bury garbage – pack it out.
    • Avoid scented items like perfumes, deodorant, or lotions.
    • Keep pets leashed and under control.
    • Know how to use bear spray properly and carry it accessible and ready.
    • Follow all park warnings and closures related to bear activity.
    • If you encounter a bear, don’t run. Back away slowly while facing the bear.
    • If attacked, fight back aggressively and make loud noises. Play dead if it’s a grizzly.
    • Report bear sightings and incidents to park authorities promptly.

Staying alert, being prepared, and respecting bears’ space is key to safety in their habitat. Caution and education can help prevent dangerous conflicts.

    Coexisting with Wild Animals

This jarring tragedy highlights the inherent risks of coexisting with powerful wild animals like grizzly bears. It has sent shockwaves through the Banff community.

While attacks are uncommon, Parks Canada reiterated the importance of bear safety education for visitors. Caution and preparation are vital when venturing into grizzly bear habitats.

Officials say they will continue efforts to maintain balance in keeping bears wild while managing safe human interactions. But the unpredictability of bears and other wildlife ultimately remains beyond human control.

This heartbreaking incident is a reminder that the splendor of Canada’s national parks also carries the potential for tragedy. Our thoughts go out to the families impacted by this devastating bear attack.
