Cycling for a Cure – Sun Life Ride Takes on Diabetes

    Published on

On October 5th, 12th, and 19th, the Sun Life Ride to Defeat Diabetes will see corporate teams across Canada swap suits for spandex to cycle for a cure. The high-energy fundraising event benefits JDRF, supporting research into type 1 diabetes.

Hundreds of business executives will pedal stationary bikes in Montreal, Toronto, and Calgary to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Additional spin events coordinated nationwide will join them virtually.

Since the inaugural Ride in 1988, the event has united corporate Canada to fund research and move closer to a world without type 1 diabetes. This year’s $2.6 million fundraising goal will accelerate breakthroughs in treatment and prevention.

Type 1 diabetes impacts nearly 300,000 Canadians. It’s an autoimmune disease requiring constant insulin dosing and blood sugar monitoring. Diabetes research has added around 25 years to life expectancy, but a cure remains elusive.

Participants are eager to ride alongside coworkers for the cause. “People are eager to come together, so we’re thrilled to be expanding this year, with events in Montreal and Toronto, and now Calgary,” said JDRF Canada CEO Dave Prowten.

    Inspiring Generosity

Title sponsor Sun Life, supporting the Ride since 2017, has helped inspire corporate Canada’s generosity. “With more than 300,000 Canadians currently living with type 1 diabetes, we’re committed to helping them live healthier lives,” said Sun Life Health President Dave Jones.

Funds raised by the Sun Life Ride to Defeat Diabetes allow JDRF to accelerate research and move the needle closer to viable therapies. While continued progress depends on this support, the event also serves to build camaraderie and morale.

    Work Colleagues Become Teammates

The shared physical activity and fundraising mission unite co-workers across departments and roles. Sweating together for a common cause can boost workplace relationships and culture.

By pooling their pedaling power, corporate teams make an impact on improving lives. But they also recharge their own workplace collaborations and morale in the process.

    Long History of Hope

Since its beginnings over 30 years ago, the Sun Life Ride has continually re-energized efforts toward better diabetes treatments. While much work remains, the event’s enduring spirit of teamwork and perseverance gives hope.

Each year, participants remind us that what we can achieve by working together exceeds what any one person could do alone. If corporate Canada keeps up this combined effort, the finish line may finally be in sight.
