What to Do in Barcelona in July 2023

Barcelona is an amazing city to visit during the summer months, and July is one of the best times to experience everything this vibrant Spanish city has to offer. The weather is hot but not unbearably so, with average highs around 80°F/27°C. It’s sunny and dry, perfect for spending time outdoors and enjoying the beaches, parks, architecture, food and culture. If you’re planning a trip to Barcelona in July 2023, here are some of the top things not to miss:

    Attend the Barcelona Summer Festival

One of the biggest events of the summer is the Barcelona Summer Festival (Festival d’Estiu de Barcelona) from late June through August. This festival brings free open-air concerts, theater performances, cultural exhibitions and activities to public spaces and venues across the city. Throughout July you can catch live music, dance, circus acts and more in plazas, parks and at the Teatre Grec outdoor theater. It’s a great way to experience the lively Barcelona nightlife scene.

    Relax on Barcelona’s Beaches

Barcelona has over 4 miles of beaches right along the coastline, perfect for sunbathing, swimming or just taking in views of the Mediterranean Sea. The most popular city beaches include Barceloneta, Nova Icària, Bogatell and Mar Bella. You can rent lounge chairs or just bring a towel and spend a leisurely day soaking up the sunshine and swimming in the refreshing sea. Don’t forget the sunscreen! Many of the beaches have amenities like showers, restrooms, volleyball nets, snack bars and more.

Wander Las Ramblas and Explore the Gothic Quarter

No first-time visit to Barcelona is complete without a stroll down the famous Las Ramblas pedestrian street in the heart of the city. Lined with vibrant shops, cafes, street performers and flower stalls, it leads you right to the Gothic Quarter, Barcelona’s historic medieval district. Wandering through the narrow Gothic Quarter streets, you’ll discover ancient plazas, the grand Barcelona Cathedral, street markets, bars, restaurants and other architectural gems.

See Sagrada Familia and More of Gaudi’s Creations

The wildly imaginative Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi left an indelible mark on Barcelona, with seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites attributed to him. No Barcelona sightseeing is complete without visiting his still unfinished masterpiece, La Sagrada Familia, a towering basilica begun in 1882 that’s known for its surreal spires, intricate facades and stained glass. Other must-see Gaudi works include Park Güell, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà (La Pedrera), among others.

Eat and Drink Your Way Through La Boqueria Market

One of Europe’s best food markets, La Boqueria is a food lover’s paradise. Located right off Las Ramblas, this massive market has hundreds of colorful stalls selling fresh produce, cured meats and cheeses, seasonal seafood, spices, sweets and more. Sample your way through the market, picking up snacks or products to take home. Or sit for tapas and drinks at one of the market bars like Pinotxo Bar. It’s a quintessential Barcelona experience.

Party at an Outdoor Beach Club

Some of Barcelona’s top day-to-night beach clubs are located right on the sand, blending beachfront relaxation with DJs, cocktails, pools and Mediterranean cuisine. Popular spots like Opium Beach Club, Purobeach Barcelona, and Carpe Diem Lounge Club are great places to hangout on the beach by day and dance the night away under the stars. With lounge chairs, Balinese beds, infinity pools, bars and restaurants, they take beach parties to the next level.

Catch a Concert at Jardins de Pedralbes

This popular outdoor concert venue hosts major international acts each summer with a lineup that spans pop, rock, jazz and classical music. Previously featured artists have included Sting, Mark Knopfler, Diana Ross, Elvis Costello and Kraftwerk. Concerts take place in the evenings June through September, in the beautiful setting of the Pedrables Gardens. It’s a special way to see a big concert in an intimate outdoor setting.

    Take in a Flamenco Show

To experience the passion and artistry of flamenco dancing, Barcelona has some great tablaos (flamenco venues) where you can catch an authentic show over dinner or drinks. Try Palau Dalmases, Los Tarantos, or the opulent El Arenal in Montjuic for an unforgettable flamenco performance in an intimate setting. July is a lively time with several shows happening nightly at various venues around the city.

    Day Trip to Mount Tibidabo

For unparalleled panoramas of Barcelona and the coastline, take the funicular ride to the top of Mount Tibidabo. At 1,448 feet (552m) high, this mountain overlooks the city with the iconic Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor church at the top. In addition to the views, kids will love the old-school amusement park at the top with carnival rides and attractions. Pack a picnic and make a day of exploring the church, amusement park and outdoor trails.

Shop Local Designers in the Born District

Barcelona has a thriving fashion scene and the Born district is one of the best places to discover up-and-coming local designers. Browse one-of-a-kind boutiques on Carrer Banys Vells and Carrer Rec, where you can find handcrafted shoes, jewelry, clothing, accessories and more from Spanish independent designers. Don’t miss the quirky Vinçon design shop housed in a modernist building.

    Food Tour through the City

One of the best ways to experience Barcelona’s incredible food and drink scene is on a small-group food tour by foot. Knowledgeable local guides will take you to hand-picked spots, recounting history and introducing you to classic Catalan specialties like pan con tomate, seafood paella, jamón ibérico, crema catalana and vermouth. You’ll also visit bustling food markets like La Boqueria and sample regional wines and craft beers. It’s a delicious way to explore authentic cuisine around the city.

Whether you want to soak up the sun on Barcelona’s stunning beaches, explore the architecture, dive into the food scene or experience the city’s music and arts – a July visit has it all. With this list of top things to do, you’ll be ready to fully enjoy everything vibrant Barcelona has to offer next summer!
