With the Toronto Film Festival quickly approaching, excitement is building around which talents will be honored at the prestigious TIFF Tribute Awards. TIFF just revealed some of this year’s honorees – and it’s an amazing lineup!

First up is legendary Hong Kong icon Andy Lau, who will receive the Special Tribute Award at the world premiere of his new film The Movie Emperor. Lau has captivated Asian cinema for 40 years across over 160 films, from early work like Boat People to Infernal Affairs to his latest role in The Movie Emperor. This honor recognizes Lau’s incredible career and influence.

Emerging Brazilian filmmaker Carolina Markowicz will also be celebrated with the TIFF Emerging Talent Award. After her acclaimed 2022 debut Charcoal, Markowicz returns with her anticipated second feature Toll. This award highlights thrilling new directorial voices like Markowicz.

Finally, cinematographer Łukasz Žal will receive the TIFF Variety Artisan Award for technical excellence. Žal’s stunning camerawork in films like Cold War and Ida has earned him two Oscar nominations. His latest project is The Zone of Interest, premiering at TIFF this year.

The Tribute Awards gala is always a highlight of the festival, bringing together cinema’s brightest stars. This year’s event also supports TIFF’s campaign to increase diverse representation.

It’s wonderful to see legends like Lau honored alongside emerging voices like Markowicz and technical wizards like Žal. TIFF consistently recognizes both established masters and exciting rising talents.
